ZICO CONTRIBUTES TO SRI LANKAN TSUNAMI RELIEF EFFORT

Premier Coconut Water Brand Donates 8,000 Cases to be Distributed Among Refugee Camp Residents in Sri Lanka

New York, NY (March 2005) –   ZICO LLC has donated 8,000 cases of its pure coconut water to help provide Sri Lankans with relief from the massive devastation caused by December’s tsunami. 96,000 units equal to 32,000 liters were donated to the American Sri Lanka Buddhist Association, Inc. and will be distributed by local Buddhist temples to refugee camps throughout the region.

“Coconut water is a natural isotonic providing much needed re-hydration and nutrients for people operating under stressful conditions where safe food and water supplies are scarce. Coconut water has been used for centuries to treat dehydration in children and adults throughout the tropics,” says ZICO CEO Mark Rampolla. “Since coconut water has these beneficial properties and is known and loved in Sri Lanka, we felt it is our obligation to send ZICO and help with tsunami relief efforts.”

The tsunami was responsible for the deaths of more than 30,000 Sri Lankans and over 1 million were left homeless. The disaster also wreaked havoc on the country’s food and water supply and Sri Lanka is suffering from extreme shortages. “There is a desperate need throughout the country for both basic drinking water and viable re-hydration options and coconut water is the ideal solution,” says Premalal Ranasinghe, Relief Coordinator for the American Sri Lanka Buddhist Association. “The people of Sri Lanka know and love coconut water and are aware that is a natural replenishment drink. We are very thankful for ZICO’s generosity and support.”
